Kitchen remodeling in Elmwood Park, IL
Kitchen remodeling in Elmwood Park frequently involves transforming the compact layouts found in 1920s brick bungalows and post-war homes. These projects often focus on opening up the original galley kitchens, which were typically small and separated from dining and living areas. Homeowners seek to create more integrated, functional spaces that better suit modern family life and entertaining. We frequently reconfigure walls, update plumbing and electrical systems, and introduce contemporary finishes while respecting the home's historic character. The goal is to maximize every square foot, enhancing both aesthetics and practicality within the existing footprint.
What Elmwood Park homeowners ask for
Elmwood Park homeowners commonly request the removal of non-load-bearing walls to connect kitchens with dining rooms, improving flow and natural light. They also frequently ask for increased storage solutions, such as custom cabinetry with smart organizers, to compensate for the smaller kitchen footprints. Integrated appliances and peninsula or island additions are popular, offering more counter space and informal dining options within these classic homes.
About Elmwood Park
Elmwood Park's housing stock still tells the story of its 1920s boom and postwar construction, which means remodeling here often involves masonry walls, modest footprints, and vintage mechanicals.
Elmwood Park's housing stock still tells the story of its 1920s boom, when John Mills & Sons built Westwood — a 245-acre subdivision of brick bungalows fanning out from the Conti Parkway circle — and postwar construction filled in the remaining blocks with solid brick homes on compact lots. Commuters ride Metra's Milwaukee District West line from the Elmwood Park station on Grand Avenue, and kids stay local in District 401 schools.
The 1920s boom and postwar construction of solid brick homes in subdivisions like Westwood often means dealing with original, compact kitchen footprints that were designed with distinct separation from other living areas. These brick bungalows and homes likely feature masonry walls, which are a significant consideration when reconfiguring layouts to open up spaces between the kitchen and dining areas. Vintage mechanicals, including original gas and electrical service, will frequently require upgrades to support modern appliances and lighting during a kitchen remodel. Furthermore, the Village's Lead Service Line Replacement Program highlights the importance of checking water supply lines, as a kitchen remodel offers a timely opportunity to address potential lead service line issues. Venting solutions also need careful planning within these modest footprints, often requiring creative approaches to achieve optimal air circulation in updated kitchens.
Kitchen remodeling in Elmwood Park necessitates careful attention to Village permits for electrical upgrades, plumbing alterations, and any gas line modifications. GS Construction & Remodeling manages the full permit application process, including coordinating with the Village for required inspections at each stage of the project.

I cannot say enough good things about GS Constructions / Greg and Patryk Szady. From the start, their proposal and cost estimate was broken down, item by item, which most contractors don't do. It allowed us to alter our project to fit our budget. Patryk also took the time to explain costs to us and help us get what we wanted for the price we could afford. Once we hired GS, they kept to their timeline, and they focused on our project. Each day we knew when to expect workers (who came on time!) and at the end of each day, we could see real progress. The crews that came to do the work were courteous, respectful of our space, and they cleaned up after themselves. Patryk and Greg didn't just show up once or twice; they were there throughout the project, and were alway helpful in answering questions, addressing concerns, and making it feel like my project was their main focus. Most importantly, the finished product was beyond our expectations. Patryk and Greg really pay attention to detail and are willing to go the extra mile to make things perfect. From exact tile or light placement, to thinking about how cabinets will sit near a doorway, to vent color, they thought of and addressed issues I hadn't even considered, and they made it look perfect, even when that meant more work for them. When I picked a paint color I ended up not loving, they offered to repaint even though it was my mistake. When I picked a wall mounted faucet known for being difficult, they spent hours trouble shooting water pressure and placement in order to get it just right. When the project was all done, Patryk and Greg followed up a few weeks later to make sure we were happy, and come back and address small punch list items that we realized only after living in the space again. It is this kind of attention to satisfaction and attention to detail that is rare to find in this industry, and it makes Patryk and Greg an absolute pleasure to work with. I have recommended them to others we have been equally happy. TL;DR: GS Construction was on time and on budget, and their prices are competitive and fair. Their work was absolutely beautiful, and we couldn't be more pleased. After this experience, I honestly would not use anyone else. I will be a returning customer for life.
