Home additions in Melrose Park, IL
Expanding your home in Melrose Park often means adapting a mid-century footprint to modern needs. Many of the homes, particularly in Winston Park, feature compact layouts built for a different era, making additions a practical solution for more space. We frequently add square footage that integrates seamlessly with existing structures, whether it's extending a ranch home or expanding a two-story. Typical projects transform a home by providing much-needed extra bedrooms, larger family rooms, or even a dedicated home office, all while respecting the original architectural style. Our work ensures the new space feels like it was always part of the house, enhancing both functionality and curb appeal.
What Melrose Park homeowners ask for
Melrose Park homeowners most frequently request primary suite additions, as many original homes lack a dedicated master bath or walk-in closet. Second-story additions are also common, providing multiple new bedrooms or a larger family area without sacrificing precious yard space. We also see demand for expanded kitchen and dining areas, creating open-concept spaces that better suit contemporary living and entertaining.
About Melrose Park
Melrose Park is one of the west suburbs' oldest villages, but much of its housing dates to the boom after World War II. This midcentury stock offers opportunities for kitchen and bathroom renovations, basement build-outs, and additions.
Melrose Park is one of the west suburbs' oldest villages — incorporated in 1882 and renamed Melrose Park in 1893 — but much of its housing dates to the boom after World War II, when manufacturers like International Harvester and Zenith drew thousands of new residents and subdivisions like Winston Park filled former farm fields with Ashley, Beverly, and Canterbury model homes between 1952 and 1964. Three elementary districts (89, 88, and 83) serve different parts of town, teens head to Proviso East or West, and the Melrose Park Metra station reaches Ogilvie in under half an hour on the UP-W line.
The postwar boom, with subdivisions like Winston Park filling former farm fields, means many homes are on lots originally platted for smaller footprints, requiring careful consideration of setbacks for additions. The Ashley, Beverly, and Canterbury model homes built between 1952 and 1964 often share similar rooflines and foundation types, which simplifies tying in new construction. Since the village was incorporated early, but most housing is mid-century, additions must balance historical context with modern needs. The village's review process for exterior changes will likely focus on maintaining the aesthetic consistency of these prevalent mid-century designs. Given the different elementary districts, it's important to note that specific zoning or review nuances might vary subtly across different parts of Melrose Park.
Home additions in Melrose Park involve extensive plan review for structural integrity, foundation work, and roof integration, requiring multiple inspections throughout the construction process. GS Construction & Remodeling manages the complete permit application and inspection scheduling for all phases of your addition.

I cannot say enough good things about GS Constructions / Greg and Patryk Szady. From the start, their proposal and cost estimate was broken down, item by item, which most contractors don't do. It allowed us to alter our project to fit our budget. Patryk also took the time to explain costs to us and help us get what we wanted for the price we could afford. Once we hired GS, they kept to their timeline, and they focused on our project. Each day we knew when to expect workers (who came on time!) and at the end of each day, we could see real progress. The crews that came to do the work were courteous, respectful of our space, and they cleaned up after themselves. Patryk and Greg didn't just show up once or twice; they were there throughout the project, and were alway helpful in answering questions, addressing concerns, and making it feel like my project was their main focus. Most importantly, the finished product was beyond our expectations. Patryk and Greg really pay attention to detail and are willing to go the extra mile to make things perfect. From exact tile or light placement, to thinking about how cabinets will sit near a doorway, to vent color, they thought of and addressed issues I hadn't even considered, and they made it look perfect, even when that meant more work for them. When I picked a paint color I ended up not loving, they offered to repaint even though it was my mistake. When I picked a wall mounted faucet known for being difficult, they spent hours trouble shooting water pressure and placement in order to get it just right. When the project was all done, Patryk and Greg followed up a few weeks later to make sure we were happy, and come back and address small punch list items that we realized only after living in the space again. It is this kind of attention to satisfaction and attention to detail that is rare to find in this industry, and it makes Patryk and Greg an absolute pleasure to work with. I have recommended them to others we have been equally happy. TL;DR: GS Construction was on time and on budget, and their prices are competitive and fair. Their work was absolutely beautiful, and we couldn't be more pleased. After this experience, I honestly would not use anyone else. I will be a returning customer for life.
